FORMER DAP VICE CHAIRMAN PASSED AWAY

His wife Tan Chui Swee, 62, as well as their two daughters and a son were at the bedside of the former MP for Bukit Mertajam and Batu Gajah when he died.
Chian's eldest daughter Hsiao Ling, 35, told The Star that her father passed away peacefully.

“He was a strong man and tried his best to fight the illness. We even told him to let himself go during the last four hours before he died but he continued to fight until his last breath,” she said, adding that he was an inspiration and would be deeply missed by the family.
Hsiao Ling said her father was diagnosed with liver cancer in December last year and his condition worsened last Wednesday.
“He started suffering from acute diarrhoea and we admitted him to the hospital on Friday,” she said.
The funeral will be held here at 11am tomorrow.
Chian was the first DAP veteran to receive the Datuk title, when he was awarded the DSPN by the Yang di-Pertua Negri of Penang in July 2008.
Chian joined the DAP in 1967 and had held several positions in the party, including national vice-chairman, national organising secretary, national publicity secretary and disciplinary committee chairman.
He was detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) on Nov 3, 1976 with fellow party member Chan Kok Kit over their stand on the issue of the mother tongue.
He was freed after four years and nine months. He and Chan won the Batu Gajah and Sungai Besi parliamentary seats respectively while under ISA detention.
Chian later moved from Perak to Penang and became MP for Bukit Mertajam in 1986 and 1990.
