Complete bridges fast, say Muar villagers

MUAR: Thousands of villagers along the Muar-Batu Pahat road want the Government to revive construction of three bridges that had been abandoned for two years.

The villagers, headed by Muar PAS division chief Abu Bakar Mohd Lajat, claimed that the uncompleted bridge projects posed a danger to road users.

About 50 accidents have occurred at the junction of Kampung Parit Jamil, Kampung Parit Bulat and Semerah in the past year.

“We have asked the Government to speed up construction as the bridge projects were supposed to be completed last year.

“However, the authorities only put up signboards near the sites saying a new contractor would be appointed to complete the project,” he told reporters in Kampung Parit Jamil yesterday.

Unhappy lot: Villagers gathering at the abandoned bridge near Kampung Parit Jamil in Muar yesterday. They want the Government to revive construction of three bridges in the area.

Abu Bakar said most of the crashes were due to slippery metal sheets that were laid on the ground to allow people to use the bridge as a temporary measure.

Former Sungai Balang assemblyman Zakariah Mahadi said the delayed projects were dangerous and also showed the Government’s inconsideration.

“We want the Government to complete the projects quickly before someone gets killed,” he said.
