Sibling at wits end after father’s death and mother’s illness
MUAR: Four siblings who lost their father due to a heart
attack last month are living on their own after their mother was
institutionalised for mental depression.
Muhammad Anwar Muhammad Ali Akbar, 19, Muhammad Azarud-din, 15, Muhammad Amiruddin, 11, and Nur Atikah, 9, are facing a bleak future without their mother.
The eldest child, Muhammad Anwar, a form six student of SM Tengku Mahkota said the siblings had to depend on their neighbours and relatives for food and other aid.
The boy’s father, a retired soldier who worked as a gardener at SJKC Chi Sin in Parit Bakar, died on Jan 7.
“After my father passed away, our mother Salamiah Abdul Majid began to suffer from depression.
“However, her illness seemed to worsen and on Feb 6, she had a delirium and we had to call the police to take her to the hospital,” said Muhammad Anwar.
The 42-year-old Salamiah, who also suffered from hypertension, is now warded in the psychiatric ward at the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital.
Muhammad Anwar said the siblings are at their wits end as no one knows how long their mother would be warded.
After their plight was mentioned, the SK Parit Raja’s PTA had decided to help by adopting Muhammad Amiruddin and Nur Atikah.
Maharani assemblyman Dr Mohamad Taslim, who came to know about the issue, had donated RM1,000 cash and some food items to the family recently.
The PAS assemblyman said the party also decided to open a bank account for caring individuals to donate to the siblings.
He said the account with Bank Simpanan Nasional was under the mother’s name and Muhammad Anwar would keep the ATM card for cash withdrawal purposes.
“The boy’s aunt Rahimah Abdul Raof, who lives next door, has agreed to look after the siblings while their mother is sick.
“PAS will provide them with 10kgs of rice and other food items every month,” he added.
Dr Mohamad said caring individuals who wanted to contribute to the siblings can send contributions to his service centre in Parit Bakar or at his clinic in the town.
